This step will be different depending on your method of getting the access point/bluetooth device signal strength. If you’re using MacOS then read my tutorial here. There are many tutorials available on how to do so on Linux and Windows. You will probably have something like this (though you should probably have more points)įirst thing we need to do is get the RSSI reading within Python. Once you’ve taken those readings, go over to a graphing software (I’m using Desmos) and plot your points, make the x-axis the RSSI (keep it negative) and y-axis the distance from source. I recommend taking at least 3 readings at the same distance. Take repeat readings if you can, RSSI can vary with even the smallest of changes in the environment.Antennas on some laptop are also directional, so during your testing keep your laptop pointing in one direction.Some WiFi access points are directional, so the RSSI will differ depending on if you are directly in front or to the side of the access point.Then stand at set distances from the access point and note the RSSI measured down along with your actual distance from the source at the time of measurement. In order to find the right graph, place a WiFi access point (or Bluetooth device) in an open area. This will work with both Bluetooth and WiFi but I will primarily be focusing on using WiFi. In this tutorial I will be going through a basic idea on how we can use the RSSI value to estimate your distance to the source. It can also become quite accurate if you use multiple sources of signal and take an average (which I’m working on at the moment). Though you cannot get an exact accurate distance reading from just the signal strength, you can still get a rough idea of the distance (especially if you take an average reading).
